2N2222 is a widely used NPN bipolar junction transistor, suitable for both switching applications and analog signal amplification. It is housed in a TO-92 package. 2N2222 is often paired with its complement, the PNP transistor 2N2907.
The next step up in power is the 2N2222 in TO-18 can package. It is capable of up to 800mA and has a metal cover that allows for better cooling.
